“Temple darshan or Girivalam first?” is one of the questions our reception team is asked most often, especially by first-time visitors and families. Here is the practical reasoning behind the recommendation above, based on the common experience of hosting thousands of pilgrims at UJ Pallazzio.
Darshan or Girivalam first? At a glance
| Darshan first (recommended) | Girivalam first | |
|---|---|---|
| Temple timing | Enter before closing — no risk of missing darshan | Risk of returning after the temple has already closed |
| Energy level | Fresh legs for the darshan queue | Tired legs after the 14 km walk make the queue harder |
| Weather & crowds | Walk Girivalam after dark — cooler, calmer, food and water stalls open | Walking begins in daytime heat, with fewer stalls open |
| Best for | First-time pilgrims, families, senior citizens | Pilgrims already familiar with the temple's timings and route |
Why do temple darshan first?
1. Temple timings
Arunachaleswarar Temple closes at night. If you enter before the closing time, you can complete your darshan calmly. If you begin Girivalam first, the 14 km walk can take several hours, and you may return to find the temple already closed for the day.
2. Your legs are fresh
When you first arrive, your body has more energy and standing in the darshan queue is easier. After a 14 km walk, many pilgrims have tired legs — and standing in a long queue afterwards becomes much harder. Doing darshan first simply feels more comfortable for most people.
3. Girivalam is more comfortable at night
Walking the Girivalam path in the evening or at night has real advantages over the daytime heat:
- Cooler weather and fresh air, instead of the midday sun.
- Food stalls, tea shops and fresh-juice vendors open along much of the route.
- Drinking water and stone benches for resting whenever you need them.
- A calmer pace — you can walk slowly and stop to rest as required.
4. A calmer spiritual experience
Many devotees feel more settled once they have had Lord Arunachaleswarar's darshan. With that done, you can begin Girivalam with a calm mind and complete the sacred walk without watching the clock for temple closing time.
What about senior citizens and elderly parents?
Not everyone can comfortably walk the full 14 km. At UJ Pallazzio we understand this, and we can help guests arrange local transportation for temple darshan, Girivalam route visits, senior citizens, families with elderly parents, and anyone unable to walk long distances — so everyone can experience Tiruvannamalai's spiritual significance comfortably. If you would like this arranged, please tell our front desk in advance. See our senior-friendly and Girivalam stay details.
The recommended order
For most pilgrims — especially first-time visitors, families and senior citizens — the most comfortable sequence is:
- Temple darshan while you are fresh and before closing time.
- Dinner or refreshments to rest and recover.
- Night Girivalam in the cooler hours, at your own pace.
Staying close to the temple and the Girivalam path makes this whole sequence easier — rest before the walk, and return to a quiet room afterwards. Contact us or call/WhatsApp +91 93616 77996 and we will help you plan darshan, Girivalam and transport around your dates.
