What is the Maha Deepam?
The Maha Deepam is a huge lamp lit at the summit of Arunachala Hill — a vast copper cauldron filled with ghee and a thick cloth wick, carried up the hill and lit at dusk on the main festival day. Devotees believe Arunachala is a manifestation of Lord Shiva as fire, and the hilltop flame represents that. When it is lit, the crowd below erupts, and the flame remains burning and visible for days afterwards. For many pilgrims, seeing the Deepam lit is the single most significant moment of the religious year.
Girivalam during Karthigai Deepam
Karthigai Deepam is also the peak Girivalam occasion. The 14 km barefoot walk around Arunachala Hill draws its largest crowds of the year on and around the Deepam day — a slow, continuous procession that runs all night. Expect the walk to take considerably longer than the usual four to five hours simply because of the sheer number of people. Why you should book months ahead
This is the part worth taking seriously. Tiruvannamalai has a finite number of rooms and Karthigai Deepam brings in a crowd many times the town's normal capacity. Hotels near the temple fill first and fill early — often months before the date. Prices rise, availability vanishes, and late bookers routinely end up staying in neighbouring towns and commuting in through heavy traffic.
